Winner of the Forward Arts Foundation Emerging Artist Award 2006, Manker will exhibit new works at her awarded solo show, titled Catfight. The show runs from June 15 – August 5.

Catfight is a response to interpersonal discourse. The work questions the desire of expression and the limitations of socially acceptable communication. Each drawing represents a series of unsent letters or thoughts. Sentences and words are erased or hidden within hundreds of delicate marks that are built up on the surface of each piece. The imagery portrays dogs hunting or wrestling, some with baroque style text. Originally inspired by French 18th century paintings of the hunt, the aggressive scenarios portrayed in Catfight, are used to replace suppressed words, actions and feelings. Not only is the work a comment on what we are taught to hold back, or self-control, it is a subversive attempt to break past verbal boundaries and indulge in the attack.
